Project 671 Victor class
Attack Submarine (Nuclear Powered)
The Victor class submarines were designed to engage enemy ballistic missile submarines, antisubmarine taskforces, and to protect friendly vessels and convoys from enemy attacks. A contemporary of the American Sturgeon class, they were significantly faster but also had much higher noise levels -- indeed, in the first two variants designers made no significant effort to reduce noise emissions. The reactor plant of all Victor-class submarines is similar to that used with the Yankee and Delta-class Ballistic Missile Nuclear Submarines (SSBNs). The two reactors are mounted in a side-by-side configuration.
The Victor I featured an advanced tear-drop hull design for high underwater speeds. Two small, two-blade propellers are fitted on the stern planes for slow-speed operation. Two external torpedo tubes hold a single nuclear-tipped E53-65K torpedo. The hull of the Victor I class was divided into seven compartments: 1 accommodations; 2 control room ; 3 reactor compartment; 4 turbines; 5 auxiliary machinery; 6 accommodations; 7 electric-motor and steering. A total of 15 units were built. The Project 671 boats were retrofitted to handle the TEST-68 wire-guided torpedo weapons under the designation Project 671B (sometimes written Project 671V). A pair of Project 671 submarines were subsequently equipped with the new "Kolos" non-acoustic detection system, and redesignated as Project 671K.

The Victor II class was enlarged to provide additional weapons capabilities and improved fire-control system. The new generation of 65 cm heavy torpedoes were longer than earlier models, and required power assistance to handle them in the torpedo room. The hull of the Victor II class was divided into eight compartments: 1 Torpedo room and accumulators; 2 Accommodations and mess; 3 Control room; 4 Reactor; 5 Turbines; 6 Turbo generators; 7 Living accommodation and diesel generators; 8 Steering system and electric motor. A total of seven units were built. While the Project 671RT class was building, information from the Walker spy ring emphasized the acoustic vulnerability of the design, construction was curtailed pending an improved design.

An improved version of the Victor II, the Victor III was an interim effort to apply some level of silencing to their submarines. The hull was lengthened by nearly 20 feet to accommodate the rafting and sound insulation for the turbine machinery. The design also features improvements in electronics, navigation systems, and radio and satellite communication systems, accomodated in the additional hull space forward of the sail. Victor II and Victor III submarines are equipped with radio buoys allowing the submarine to maintain communications while submerged. All Victors are double-hulled, though some sources reported that the Victor-III retains the eight-compartment layout of the Victor-II, while other sources suggest it has nine inner hull compartments. The outer hull is coated with anti-hydroacoustic materials to reduce the possibility of detection. The outer hull of the Victor III is made partly from light alloys, and is distinguishable by a high stern fin fitted with a towed array dispenser -- the first Soviet submarine fitted with a towed array. The large pod was needed so that the array could be reeled over a large radius, solve early problems with cracks in the rubber coating. A total of 26 units were constructed, in two groups. The first group of 21 Project 671RTM boats were built between 1977 and 1985.

An additional group of five Project 671RTMK boats were built at the Admiralty shipyard in St Peterburg, equipped with the new "Kolos" non-acoustic sensor suite. Some Project 671RTMs were upgraded to the 671RTMK configuration, and all units of this variant were fitted for the new "Granat" strategic cruise missiles. The Project 671RTMK also incorporated for the first time a fully integrated submarine combat direction and fire control command system. The "Viking" system, said to be based on that developed for the Norwegian Ula class submarines, ran on computers allegedly obtained from the Toshiba Corporation of Japan [at the time the affair was publicly reported as relating to multi-axis milling machines for propellers].

Some reports suggest that some Victor-III boats were permamently assigned to ASW duties, loaded with the carried the RPK-6 torpedo-carrying missile, while others were dedicated to the anti-shipping mission and armed with the new P-100 anti-ship missile.

A single unit of this class, mounting 10-meter fairing on the deck forward of the sail for SS-N-21 tests, is unofficially known as a Victor IV.

On 10 August 1985 one of two reactors on the K.314 Victor-I class submarine was being refuelled at Chazhma Bay, near Vladivostock. A crane used to reposition the reactor lid failed, triggering a nuclear reaction that caused a thermal explosion which ruptured both the aft bulkhead and the pressure hull. The freshly loaded core was thrown out of the reactor. The official casualty figures were 10 killed, 10 cases of acute radiation sickness and 39 other cases of radiation sickness. The Russian Navy has four damaged submarines, of which four are in the Far East, in the Pavlovski Bay (project 675, serial No. 175 and 541 and project 671, serial No. 610) and one - in the North (project 675, serial No. 533).

All Victor Is and IIs had been decommissioned by 1996. Of the 26 units of the Victor III class, various sources suggest that somewhere bewteen 8 and 15 had had been decommissioned due to lack of funds in the 1999-2000 timeframe. This would leave somewhere between 11 and 18 Victor-III units in service, though almost certainly at a low level of operability. Additional units are being retired at a rate of 2 or 3 every year when their reactor core lives expire, which would suggest that the entire class may be retired in the 2005-2010 timeframe. The identity of the currently operational units is somewhat conjectural.

These small deep-diving nuclear-powered submarines were probably designed for covert underwater intelligence collection [ "research" or "ocean engineering"). The 'Yankee Stretch' conversion probably serves as a "mother ship" for transport and support of these craft. The "Paltus" nomenclature is also associated with the entirely unrelated Project 877 submarines designated "Kilo" by NATO.

Project 627 Kit
November class

Project 627 began with a 25 November 1952 requirement to develop a strategic attack submarine for firing a large nuclear tipped torpedo at coastal American cities. With the success of strategic missile programs, including submarine launched cruise missiles, Project 627 was re-oriented as an attack submarine. The first two units [K-3 & K-14 ] were built to the Project 627 design, with subsequent units built to the more combat-capable Project 627A specification. Unlike the first two submarines, these were fully combat capable, equipped with the combat system of the Project 641 Foxtrot class diesel-electric attack submarines. The steel hull was divided into nine compartments: 1 Torpedo room and accommodations 2 Accumulator, accommodations and mess; 3 Control room; 4 Auxiliary machinery and diesel generator; 5 Reactor compartment; 6 Turbine compartment; 7 Electro-technical and control center for reactor; 8 Auxiliary equipment; 9 Steering system, accommodations.

Leninskiy Komsomol, the first Soviet nuclear powered submarine, was launched on 09 August 1957. The boat's nuclear reactors started for the first time on 04 July 1958, and on 17 July 1962, K-3 was the first Soviet submarine to reach the North Pole. Several units of this class suffered reactor accidents. The remaining Project 627 and 627A class submarines were decommissioned between 1988 and 1992.

One Project 645 ZhMT submarine was built. Commissioned on 30 October 1963, K-27 was a modified November-class SSN equipped with two VT-1 type liquid metal (lead-bismuth) cooled reactors. The steel hull was divided into seven compartments: 1 Torpedo room; 2 Accumulators and Living accommodation; 3 Control room; 4 Reactor compartment; 5 Turbo and diesel generators, cooling and auxiliary machinery; 6 Turbines; 7 Generator. It was modified to test the reactors that were intended for use on the high-speed Alfa-class submarines. During sea trials on 24 May 1968, a sudden and unexplained loss of reactor power occurred. Radioactive gases began to leak into the reactor compartment, and nine members of the crew died from radiation sickness. K-27 was never returned to service.

The development of the first Soviet ballistic missile submarine started with a governmental order for the adaptation of a diesel-powered submarine of the 611 Zulu class to be equipped with the D-1 launching system and two R-11FM missiles. This new submarine designated as B-611 was developed by OKB-16. The technical design of the submarine was completed by the end of 1954.

Unlike its predecessors the B-611 submarine had an additional missile compartment with two firing tubes which passed through the strong hull. To accommodate the new launching complex the structure of armament was changed. The spare torpedos, mines and artillery armament were removed and at the expense of removing one of four groups of storage compartments additional launching devices for missile firings were installed.

To fire the missile the submarine had to submerge, the cover of the launching tube was opened and the missile was raised to the edge of the tube. The missile was fastened with the help of two racks, which were removed at liftoff. The pre-launch preparation were conducted underwater and lasted two hours. When submerged it took five minutes to launch the first missile and another five minutes to launch the second one. The launch could be carried out at a speed of up to 12 knots.

The B-611 submarine was assembled in Severodvinsk and some parts of the submarine were delivered from Leningrad. The construction of the first Soviet ballistic missile submarine was completed in September 1955 and received the tactical designation "B-62". The B-62 was Project 611A [ZULU IV] with a single R-11FM (Scud) missile. Some sources quote B-67 as the original Project 611A, however only B-62 fits the known construction dates. The other submarines were Project 611AB ZULU V with two such missiles. In September 1955 the first ballistic missile was launched from the first B-611 submarine "B-62". Between 1956 and 1958 further testing of the D-1 launch system was carried out and in 1959 the "B-62" submarine was converted to carry out the first underwater missile firing.

From 1956 on the B-611 submarines were equipped with five new diesel-powered engines and received the new designation AV-611. The first AV-611 submarines served in the Northern fleet. The four submarines that were re-equipped in Severodvinsk were commissioned in 1957 and served in the 40th brigade of the Northern Fleet while the AV-611 re-equipped at Komsomolsk-na-Amur served in the Pacific Fleet.

After an improved launch system was developed, the original launch systems D-1 was removed from operational status in 1967. In the second half of the 1960s the AV-611 submarines were equipped with hydroacoustic devices and improved navigation and communication systems. They remained in service until the end of the 1980s.

Diesel-Electric Torpedo Submarine
The new, fourth postwar generation Project 677 Lada class diesel-electric submarine is a successor to the Type 877EKM and Type 636 Kilo-class submarines. The Lada type is significantly smaller (1,600 tons D/W) than the previous Kilo type submarines (2,325 tons D/W), and generally configured for anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, minelaying and special forces deployment.

The Project 1650 Amur, intended for export, is part of the same project and differ only in customer requirements and operational conditions. In 1989 the Rubin Marine Design Bureau in St. Petersburg was commissioned by the Russian Navy to design a new fourth-generation diesel-electric submarine. Rubin completed design work on a whole family of the Amur diesel-electric submarines with a displacement of 550 to 1,850 tons. The designers adopted essentially the same design and layout solutions for entire submarines and their separate subsystems, using unified or modified equipment.





The Amur class will also include provisions for a fuel cell plant that can be installed during construction or modernisation to give air independent propulsion with oxygen/hydrogen and electric/ chemical generators. However, the first submarines of the type will not be powered with such a plant. The reason is high cost of air-indipendent power plants, as well as higher level of fire safety required to operate them. The submarines powered with air-indipendent power plants may appear in the market not earlier than by 2003-2004. . According to estimates, Kristall-27E AIP system will increase the Amur Class submarines’ submerged endurance by 15 to 45 days (the longer endurance is ensured by a short-term operation of the diesel engine in the snorkeling mode).

The submarines will have high submerged cruising range and endurance, combat efficiency and reliability, and low acoustic signature. The Amur is intended to be the most advanced export design to date, incorporating many of the signature-reduction technologies proven on the Project 636 Kilo, notably anechoic tile coatings and a skewed seven-bladed propeller. Their sonar equipment includes highly sensitive direct-listening transducers at the forward end and a towed transducer array. It will be outfitted with six torpedo tubes, and its 18 weapons will comprise a mix of torpedoes and torpedo-tube launched missiles. Measuring 67 metres in length and 7.2 metres wide, It will include an anechoic tile coating on the outer hull and a skewed 7-blade propeller. The vessel's surface speed will be 10 kt; submerged 21 kt. The submerged cruising range using economic speed is 500 nautical miles at 3 kt. The maximum diving depth is 250 m, with an endurance of 45 days with a crew of 34.

As of mid-1999 no customer had been found for the Amur 1650-class export submarine laid down at Admiralty Shipyard on 26 December 1997, as India had apparently decided it was not interested in the boat. The similar Lada-class (some sources consider this to be a Project 877 boat) Sankt Petersburg was begun the same day at the same facility for the Russian Navy.
